The job of Detective Lieutenant exists in order to provide for the mid-level management of three separate Detective Units and the Prosecution Division. The three units of the Detective Division consist of the Day Detective Unit, the Night Detective Unit, and the Juvenile Detective Unit. The Prosecution Unit consists of a District Court Sergeant, the Superior Court Sergeant, and the Municipal Court Sergeant. In addition, to these duties the Detective Lieutenant also handles the responsibility of Public Information Officer (PIO). As the Public Information Officer the Detective Lieutenant prepares press releases in relation to arrest and public service announcements. Detectives within this division investigate approximately 4000 criminal complaints per year.
